Ask Me, Part I (M101-002)
Building positive, long-standing relationships in the underground music industry is integral to the furthering of the movement that is HOUSE. It is with this attitude and approach that Music 101 Recordings has developed a certain unity with its artists and DJ's since its inception. Playin' 4 the City and Music 101 first crossed paths in October, 1999, when the band was booked to perform at the label's flagship club, Mad Bar, in Chicago. This date marked the band's first performance in the United States. Playin' 4 the City had already built a reputation as one of France's premier live House ensembles, and their regular performances at Mad Bar have now become legendary in Chicago. The release of "ASK ME" continues this great legacy. SIDE A is a bonafide dance-floor MONSTER! Combine the sultry vocals of Carla Prather with the smooth drum programming and nimble keyboard action of Olivier Portal (the band's leader), add a thick bassline, and all the ingredients for a DJ box mainstay are in place. SIDE B speaks for itself with two words: DERRICK CARTER. One of the world's biggest superstar DJ's and producer/ remixers (and also a weekly resident at Mad Bar), Derrick serves up a generous helping of the kind of funky dubbed-out house that only he can make. Write-Ups: Number one for Music 101 will leave you begging for more. The original Ask Me is a sweet and soulful song with easy percussion and the perfect tempo for a good, strong deep set. The other side is fierce with Bang & Carter (Derrick Carter that is) mix that will shake you loose from the dreamy love vibe in the original - this record makes you move. 5/5 (Jon Wesley, BPM culture July 2001 issue 26) |
